Starting the Work

how to find the right therapist

Phoenix at the River

Let’s be honest: looking for a therapist can feel a lot like online dating. You scroll through endless profiles, try to decode brief bios, wonder if their “vibe” matches yours, and hope you don’t end up awkwardly sitting across from someone who just doesn’t get you.

When you’re looking for someone to hold space for your relationship, your gender exploration, your neurodivergence, or your sex life, you shouldn’t have to spend half your session teaching them basic vocabulary. You deserve a genuine connection where you feel seen, safe, and held.

Here is a brief guide on how to navigate the therapist “dating scene” and find the partner in healing who is truly the best fit for you.

1. Know Your Must-Haves

Just like in dating, it helps to know what you want before you start looking. Are you looking for someone with lived experience in queer, trans, or polyamorous spaces? Do you need a therapist who is affirming of kink and nonmonogamy, or someone who understands neurodivergent burnout without pathologizing it? Knowing your non-negotiables saves you time and protects your energy.

2. Treat the Consultation Call Like a First Date

Most therapists offer a free 15-minute phone consultation. Think of this as a low-stakes coffee date. You aren’t committing to years of therapy; you’re just checking the chemistry. Notice how your body feels while talking to them:

  • Does their voice feel grounding?
  • Do they listen with warmth and curiosity?
  • Do you feel comfortable asking them about their experience with your specific needs?

3. Look for Resonance, Not Perfection

A great therapist won’t give you a rigid checklist or tell you how to live your life. Instead, they offer a reliable anchor where your nervous system can settle and unmask. Pay attention to whether their approach feels collaborative, direct, and body-aware. You want someone who can hold the hard questions alongside your joy.

4. It’s Okay to “Break Up”

If you have a few sessions and realize things just aren’t clicking, it is completely okay to move on. A good therapist will celebrate you honoring your needs and can even help offer referrals to someone who might be a better match. Therapy is your space.
